PEOPLE'S UNIVERSITY ONLINE: Around the World in Literature & Language - Class 1: Sweden

The OCPL Summer Reading Program theme for 2020 is "Reading Takes You Places" and our summer People's U is going to do just that! We're going to dive into some great world literature and along the way learn some useful words and phrases from the regions these stories take place. We'll be heading to places like Japan, Russia, Nigeria, Italy, Scandinavia, Australia,  and more! Join us as we 読んだ (Yonda), читать (chitat'), soma, leggere, lese, read our way across the world.

Dr. David Javersak will launch our Summer Reading for adults series, People's University: Around the World in Literature & Language. We will start in Sweden!  Watch live, June 11 at 6:30 pm on YouTube, Facebook, or the OCPL website

Välkommen to class one! Dr. Javersak will discuss two Swedish authors of funny stories and warm human interest including Fredrik Backman, author of A Man Called Ove, My Grandmother Asked Me, To Tell You She's Sorry, Britt-Marie Was Here, Beartown, and Us Against You. These works were published first in Swedish between 2012 and 2018.

He will also tell us about Jonas Jonasson, author of The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window and Disappeared and The Accidential Further Adventures of The Hundred Year-Old Man. These books were also originally published in Swedish.

Along the way, we will learn useful words and phrases in Norwegian, which, granted, isn't Swedish, but is close enough!

Join us! It will be way better than anything on TV! Better yet, read with us! For every minute you read, you'll travel a virtual mile. How far will you travel during this year's Summer Reading program? This week, we've curated a list of Scandanavian authors whose books offer a glimpse in life in the far north. We hope you like mysteries and crime, because the Scandanavians sure do! But don't worry if you don't - there are some very funny and touching novels listed too. Check them out in our Summer Reading Blog post for week one.

Starting June 15, 2020 sign up online at ohiocountylibrary.readsquared.com or download the READsquared app at the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store to log your minutes read. Let us know where you've traveled and how far this summer through books! We'll be keeping track of countries visited in books and miles (in minutes) read through an online platform.
