PEOPLE'S UNIVERSITY ONLINE: Around the World in Literature & Language - Class 4: Serbia

Zdravo! On July 2, Dr. John Cox, former history professor at Wheeling Jesuit and current Professor of East European History, North Dakota State University, will shepherd students 5,700 miles back west (and 330 years back to the future) to Serbia through the novels of Biljana Jovanovic. A translator of books from Serbian, Bosnian, Croatian, Hungarian, and Slovene to English, Dr. Cox will teach useful words and phrases in Serbian.

Instructor Dr. John Cox (formerly history professor at WJU), Professor of East European History, North Dakotah State University will discuss the novels of Biljana Jovanovic plus useful words and phrases in Serbian.

Biljana Jovanović (1953–96) was a Serbian intellectual who published poetry, three novels, four plays, and a number of nonfiction pieces, mostly connected to her time in the anti-Miloševic opposition of the 1990s. She was known for her feminist and anti-war work with human rights groups and a “flying” (underground) university.

John K. Cox is professor of history and department head at North Dakota State University. His translations include five volumes of works by Danilo Kiš; short fiction by Ismail Kadare, Ivo Andric, and Meša Selimovic; and nonfiction by Joseph Roth and Stefan Heym. He lives in Fargo.
