One of our patrons was once overheard saying something like, "Dr. Javersak is so interesting, I could listen to him read the dictionary!" After some thought, we decided to put that bold assertion to the test, with a live program featuring none other than our own Dr. David Javersak actually reading the dictionary, with the following enhancements: an exploration of the various types of dictionaries; a brief history of dictionaries; an examination of the Oxford English Dictionary's development and its American influences; Noah Webster; Ambrose Bierce's Devil's Dictionary; Samuel Johnson; and how and why dictionaries have to be updated. We think it will indeed be quite interesting. Join us, and find out. As Bierce defined it, "Dictionary, n. a malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work." If anyone can make it elastic again, it's our good friend David Javersak.
SPEAKER BIO: David Javersak is a retired professor of history, West Liberty University.
