Darryl Clausell, longtime President of the Wheeling Branch of the NAACP and retired coordinator of Continuing and Community Education at West Virginia Northern Community College will share the history of segregated Lincoln School. Lincoln School was founded in 1866 in a two room house on Twelfth Street. It was among the first public schools established for African Americans in the United States. The school rose to prominence under principal James McHenry Jones. In 1875, Lincoln was moved from Twelfth Street to Chapline Street. The most modern Lincoln school building opened on Chapline Street in 1943. There, the school (and high school after 1900), continued to educate the African-American children of Ohio County (and also Marshall County) until desegregation in 1954.
