From Lunch with Books: Amy M. Alvarez Inspires Audience with Poetry

The Wheeling Poetry Series returned on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 with Amy M. Alvarez at Lunch with Books. Alvarez, who is a Morgantown, West Virginia resident and was born in New York City to Jamaican and Puerto Rican parents, read selections of her poetry which focuses on race, ethnicity, gender, systemic injustice, and social justice - with incorporations of Appalachian influence.  The Lunch with Books audience was able to ask Alvarez questions regarding her influences, background and upcoming projects.

Amy M. Alvarez is a Black Latina poet, educator, and scholar. She has been awarded fellowships from CantoMundo, Amy AlvarezVONA, Macondo, VCCA, and the Furious Flower Poetry Center. Her poetry has appeared or is forthcoming in nationally and internationally recognized literary journals including Ploughshares, New Ohio Review, River Styx, Colorado Review, Crazyhorse, Alaska Quarterly Review, PRISM international, and elsewhere. She now lives in Morgantown, West Virginia, and teaches at West Virginia University.

The Wheeling Poetry Series event was introduced by Marc Harshman, West Virginia Poet Laureate. Harshman recently celebrated his tenth anniversary as West Virginia's Poet Laureate. Governor Earl Ray Tomblin appointed Harshman poet laureate on May 18, 2012, after the passing of Irene McKinney.

May 31, 2022:  Not Sonnets: Observations from an Ordinary Life.

For years Bonnie Thurston has written short poems that focus on a single image or one revelatory idea. They were not sonnets, but were all fourteen lines long. The great sonneteers wrote sequences, often several on one topic, and in this Bonnie Thurston follows in their footsteps. The poems lead the reader on a gentle journey from home as they move through seasons in a sequence focusing on daily experiences that, in the words of Wordsworth, are “reflected in tranquility.” In these insightful, honed, and precise poems you will discover the extraordinariness of the ordinary life and, mirabile dictu, wisdom. This is a collection to savour.
