Intelligencer Newspapers Now Online from 1852 to Present

If you've been patiently waiting for the addition of the Wheeling Intelligencer newspapers from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, we have good news! We are pleased to announce that, with the exception of the dates 1/1/83 until 6/30/85,  our digital collections now include Wheeling Intelligencer newspapers from 1852 through the present!

The digitized newspapers are indexed, making them searchable by names, keywords, and dates. Users can browse by date, search, view, and download pdfs of full newspaper pages. Users can also clip and share articles, headlines, pages, and stories using the digitized archives interface. Patrons and guests can access the newspapers at any time through a computer, tablet, or smartphone - no library card needed!

The Library has been working with Advantage Preservation over the past three years to digitize our microfilmed newspapers. The Intelligencer papers between January 1983 and June 1985 are on microfiche sheets, rather than microfilm reels and have not yet been converted. Digitizing these microfiche sheets will be our next goal in the digitization process so we will have a complete Intelligencer record online. Following the digitization of the microfiche of the January 1983 through June 1985 Intelligencers, our next big digitizing project will focus on theWheeling News-Register microfilm reels, which span from 1863 to the present.

Though many of our newspapers are now available online, the Library still houses an extensive physical microfilm collection on-site. In addition to the Wheeling Intelligencer (1856-present) and the Wheeling News-Register (1863-present), other newspapers available on microfilm at the Ohio County Public Library include:

While the Library is currently open for in-person visits by appointment only, patrons and guests may make an appointment to use a microfilm machine. Call 304-232-0244 to schedule an appointment or use the Library’s “Ask a Librarian” form.
