OCPL Week 2019 Begins Saturday April 27

Posted 04/02/19

The sky’s the limit this year for the Ohio County Public Library’s annual OCPL Week. From Saturday, April 27 to Friday, May 3, OCPL Week will see the library “Shooting for the Moon!”

OCPL Week 2019

An annual event, OCPL Week aims to increase public awareness of all the great services available for free at the Ohio County Public Library.  “This includes offerings like free downloadable e-books, music, magazines, and movies, as well as free meeting rooms for the public to use, home delivery of library materials to homebound patrons, Story Time and Toddler Time for children, and Lunch with Books and People’s University programs for adults,” said Director Dottie Thomas.

This year’s OCPL Week, themed “Shoot for the Moon,” will act as a launching pad, promoting the upcoming summer reading program, “A Universe of Stories,” which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Book Sale HoursKicking off the week of celebration is the Annual Book Sale. The doors to the Book Sale open Saturday morning, April 27th, at 9:00 am. A variety of fiction and non-fiction books, children’s books, audio CDs, music CDs, DVDs, magazines, and, this year, even board games will be for sale on the lower level of the library.

Prices and hours are available on the Library's website.

Amazon Gift CardAlso starting Saturday the 27th is Fine Free Week. Patrons will be able to bring in late materials all week long without paying late fees. As a bonus, all patrons who bring in their materials – late or not – and check out library materials will be entered into daily contests for a chance to win special giveaways. Patrons who find rockets hidden around the library in a space-themed scavenger hunt will receive a special prize, and those who enter the “I Love my Library to the Moon and Back” Contest will be entered to win the grand prize giveaway of a $100.00 Amazon gift card.

Children's Book WeekOh my stars, OCPL Week this year falls on the 100th Anniversary of Children’s Book Week! To celebrate, the Library will act as ground control for a number of events featuring children’s books and programs for kids.

Monday night, April 29th at 6 pm, Tony M. Music will return for an out of this world family night in the library auditorium. Tony, a full-time children's music entertainer, integrates music, literature, and storytelling into an educational, interactive, and FUN experience.

Lunch With Books logoThen on Tuesday, April 30 at noon, all systems are go for author Cheryl Harshman and illustrator Bob Villamagna to launch their new children’s book, “Once a Mouse,” created for the Wheeling 250 celebration at the library’s weekly Lunch With Books program. Lunch With Books programs offer a variety of presentations by some of the Valley’s most thought-provoking authors, knowledgeable historians, and talented musicians. “Bring your lunch, feed your brain,” Tuesdays at noon in the library auditorium.

Regular Children’s programs will continue throughout the week, including Toddler Time, the library’s story and music series geared toward infants to children age three, a fun-filled thirty-minute interactive program that uses rhymes, songs, puppets, musical instruments, and more to stimulate the learning process of babies and toddlers. Toddler Times take place in the Library’s Auditorium on Monday and Friday mornings at 10:30 am.

Children ages three to preschool can take a giant leap into books at Story Time, which incorporates the early literacy skills need to master reading through a launchpad of books, rhymes, songs, and crafts. These high-quality, free story time programs are offered throughout the year on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10:00 AM in the Children’s Department. On April 30 and May 1, staff will lead children in reading “Quiet Bunny” by Lisa McCue, putting on the finger play “Hippity-Hop Hippity-Hay,” and making a bunny mask craft.

People's University LogoChildren’s books and kids programs aren’t all that’s in our orbit for the week. Our newest People’s University series, “Wild, Wonderful, & Weird Wheeling Stories,” will be in full swing when Jon-Erik Gilot presents Class 4, “Weird Stories of Wheeling in the Civil War,” Tuesday night, April 30 at 7 pm. From a pillaged statue to a raid that never happened, Gilot will unleash a lightning round of bizarre Civil War stories. The 25thoffering in our People’s University series starts Tuesday, April 9 and runs for eight weeks through Tuesday, May 28. People’s University features free courses, taught by experts, which enable patrons to pursue their goal of lifelong learning in classic subjects such as history, literature, science, philosophy, sociology, music appreciation, and more.

As OCPL Week comes to a close, the winner of the big giveaway, a $100.00 gift card to amazon.com, will be announced Saturday, May 4. This also starts the t-minus 4 weeks countdown to the “Universe of Stories” Summer Reading Program. Starting Saturday, June 1, OCPL patrons, both young and old, will be challenged to “Read to the Moon.” Each minute of reading logged by both children, teens, and adults will count as one mile. The daily distance read to the moon will be tracked through July 20, the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Spaced-themed children’s programs, Monday Night Movies, and special displays will take place at the Library throughout the “Universe of Stories” Summer Reading Program which runs through the end of July.
