Summer Reading 2020 - Where Has Reading Taken You So Far This Summer? - Plus New Book Releases

We've been traveling in books for our 2020 OCPL Summer Reading Challenge: Reading Takes You Places for a whole month now our here at the Library. We've been to countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania so far. This week alone, our Children's Department visited Antarctica, and tonight at 6:30 pm our Summer Reading Program for adults, People's University: Around the World in Literature and Language will be broadcast live from Sydney, Australia! Books really can take you places! And guess what? We're only halfway around the world! We still have a month left of Summer Reading and we have even places to visit before our 2020 Challenge wraps up on August 15th.

Each minute you read between now and August 15th will count as one mile. We'll be keeping track of countries visited in books and miles (in minutes) read through an online platform.

READSquared is a new software the Library will be using to track our Summer Reading participation for all ages. Sign up online at ohiocountylibrary.readsquared.com or download the READsquared app at the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

Audiobooks count toward your Summer Reading Minutes! Log these new arrivals on READSquared. Or visit one of our online collections stream audiobooks from your smartphone and other wifi-enabled digital devices. If you have a Kindle or a tablet, check out our e-book collections, too!

Audiobooks on CD are available to reserve for curbside pick-up at the OCPL.

Reading Graphic Novels this summer? Log those minutes read on READSquared, too, to earn badges and prizes. Check out even more Graphic Novels in our online catalog or download digital copies through WVDeli and Hoopla

Want to Keep Seeing New Arrivals at the Library?

There are several ways to do that:

1) Like and follow the Ohio County Public Library page on Facebook.  We will be posting photos of new books as they are being processed.  You can "browse" these photos and contact us to reserve any items that look appealing. 

2) Subscribe to our "News and Announcements" email list. We will compile the photos uploaded to Facebook weekly and send them out in an email blast. Sign up for this email list by heading to our news page, clicking on the subscribe button, and then signing up to receive updates from "New and Announcements. 

3) Download our free OCPL Connect smartphone app and make sure to select "New Releases" under "Settings." You'll receive notifications on your smartphone when new releases are added to our website.

OCPL Summer Reading 2020: Reading Takes You Places

Subscribe to our OCPL Kids! YouTube Channel, like our Facebook Page Ohio County Public Library Kid’s Page,  or tune in to our Story Time Online: Reading Takes You Places web page to watch all of our upcoming Story Times, Toddler Times, and Special Summer Reading Activities. These programs count toward your child's READSqaured minutes! Don't forget to log them as you watch. We're heading to Africa next week and South America after that! For a full schedule of kids programs this summer, download an OCPL Kids Summer Reading Brochure. For kids who like to log their minutes on paper, download this Zebra stripe reading log. Each 15 minutes read is another zebra stripe!

Lunch With Books Livestream occurs every Tuesday at noon on the Lunch With Books Facebook page, our Lunch With Books YouTube channel, and on the OCPL website's LWB Livestream page. Log into your Youtube or Facebook account to ask questions and interact with each week's guest!

And there's still three more lectures coming up in the People's University Online: Around the World in Literature and Language. Tonight at 6:30 pm we'll be heading down under to visit Australia with Brad Fitzmaurice's program, "Jumbucks, Billabongs and Budgie Smugglers: Ballads and Bards of the Australian Bush." We'll visit Italy with Lou Volpe next on July 23, then Columbia with Dr. Kim Grewe on July 30.  Watch People's University Online through our People's University YouTube Channel, People's U Facebook Page, or the People's U Online OCPL website page

The Library's Summer Reading Finale for adults will take place online, Thursday, Aug. 6 at 6:30 pm, when Dr. David Javersak hosts a World Geography Bee. The Geography Bee will feature questions inspired, in part, by the Around the in Literature and Language World People’s University series. Prizes will be awarded in the form of gift certificates to local businesses.
