Thanksgiving Hours and Closings

Posted 11/20/17

OCPL Closes at 5 pm, Wednesday, November 22, and is closed all day, Thursday, November 23, 2017, for Thanksgiving

For the Thanksgiving Holiday, the library will close at 5:00 pm, Wednesday, November 22 and will be closed all day long, Thursday, November 23, 2017.

In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. Today, our Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November. This was set by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939 (approved by Congress in 1941).

While we are closed for the holiday, access is available to many Library services remotely, including digital downloads of eBooks through WVDeli and OverDrive’s Digital Download Service, e-magazines, mp3 music downloads through FreegalInstantflix’s streaming video platformTumbleBooks which offers animated, talking picture books, read-along chapter books and more for young readers.

Normal library hours will resume Friday, November 24.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
